Keeping things in proportion

 From the SMH:

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown said going to a strip club was nothing compared to sending Australian troops to war.

“I think the electorate can judge which one did the more harm,” Senator Brown told reporters.

Didn’t he actually say that Kevin Rudd might have been drunk when going to the strip joint but John Howard was sober when he committed troops to Iraq?

Yes, that is right. The SMH gave an abridged version: the fuller quote can be found at The Age (can’t be bothered with the link) as follows:

In Melbourne this morning, Greens leader Bob Brown compared the opposition leader’s indiscretion to the Prime Minister’s decision take the nation to war in Iraq.

“Four years ago, Kevin Rudd got drunk and took himself into a strip club,” Senator Brown said.

“Four years ago, John Howard, sober, took Australia into the Iraq war. I think the electorate can judge which one did the more harm,” he said.

The SMH’s abridged version is, I think, accurate as to the gist, but the verbatim version in The Age is even better.
